I Call Bullshit on These Website “Rules”

Let’s talk about the so-called “rules” of web design—the ones that supposedly guarantee success but are actually holding you back from being your authentic self. And let me tell you, I call bullshit on most of them.

Here’s a prime example: “Don’t swear on your website; it’s unprofessional and will turn away clients.”

Well, yeah. It might turn away some clients. But guess what? Those aren’t your people.

If swearing is part of how you naturally express yourself, then scrubbing your language clean for the sake of “professionalism” is doing you more harm than good. It creates a disconnect between who you are and how you’re showing up online. And when your dream clients land on your site, they don’t feel that magnetic pull. Why? Because you’re playing it safe instead of being real.

Your ideal clients don’t want cookie-cutter. They want you. The bold, unapologetic, fire-starting YOU. If you drop an occasional “fuck” on your website because that’s how you talk when you’re excited or passionate, your dream clients will see that and think, “Finally, someone who gets me!”

Another “rule” I love to break? That your website has to appeal to everyone. No, it doesn’t. In fact, it shouldn’t. Trying to cater to everyone dilutes your message and makes you forgettable. Instead, your site should repel the wrong clients and attract the right ones—those who resonate with your vibe, your tone, and your vision.

The truth is, there are no one-size-fits-all rules for websites. What works for some might not work for you, and that’s okay. The only rule that matters is this: Make your website a reflection of YOU. Authenticity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the secret sauce that makes your dream clients fall in love with your brand.

So, let’s toss those outdated rules in the bin, shall we? Swear if you want to. Use bold colors. Share your quirks. Build a website that screams this is who I am, take it or leave it.

Because the ones who take it? They’ll be the clients you’ve been dreaming of. ❤️‍🔥
